Media Viability Trainer

Kenya Community Media Network (KCOMNET) seeks a dedicated and experienced Media Viability Trainer to enhance the financial and operational sustainability of three community radio stations in Turkana: Ref FM, Ata Nayeche, and Echami Radio. This position is part of the Umoja Radio for Peace project, aimed at empowering community radios to effectively serve refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities with a focus on conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training Development:
    • Design comprehensive training modules tailored to the specific needs of Ref FM, Ata Nayeche, and Echami Radio.
    • Ensure training content covers media viability, financial literacy, revenue diversification, fundraising, and marketing skills.
  • In-House Training:
    • Conduct hands-on, in-house training sessions at each of the three radio stations.
    • Deliver practical workshops on financial literacy, including identifying diverse revenue streams, effective fundraising strategies, and marketing skills.
  • Business Model Development:
    • Collaborate with each radio station to develop sustainable business models.
    • Provide ongoing support and mentorship to help implement these business models effectively.
  • Reporting:
    • Write a detailed report upon completion of the training activities.
    • Include assessments of each station’s progress, challenges encountered, and recommendations for future support.

Objectives of the Training

  1. Enhance Media Viability: Train the three community radio stations on strategies to achieve financial and operational sustainability.
  2. Financial Literacy: Equip the stations with skills to manage finances, identify diverse revenue streams, and implement effective fundraising and marketing strategies.
  3. Business Model Development: Assist the stations in developing and implementing robust business models tailored to their unique contexts and needs.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • Profound knowledge of media viability in Kenya.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a media viability trainer.
    • At least 5 years of experience in the Kenyan media industry.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong understanding of financial management, revenue generation, fundraising, and marketing within the media sector.
    • Proven track record in developing and implementing business models for media organizations.
    • Excellent training and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and inspire community radio staff.
  • Additional Advantages:
    • Experience working with community radio stations in Kenya.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in conflict-affected areas and with diverse communities.
