Community radios sensitizing the public on the new physical education and sports policy.

Kenya Community Media Network, in partnership with Sports For Development Africa-GIZ, is currently undertaking a project that aims at sensitizing the public about Physical Education and Sport Policy through community radio. The policy, which was launched by Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha, is aimed at mainstreaming physical education and sports in all learning activities and this comes even as the country continues with the gradual rollout of the CBC, which puts emphasis on competencies and talents. To implement this project, KCOMNET is partnering with 8 radio stations, including Ratego Radio in Siaya, Mwanedu Fm in Taita Taiveta, Koch Fm in Nairobi, Amani radio in Nakuru, Radio Anyole in Vihiga, Kangema in Murang’a, Bus Radio in Kajiado, Bililia Husema and Ref Fm in Turkana.
The first activity that took place in the month of January was a content development workshop which brought together the radio broadcasters, a team that was in charge of drafting the policy, which was from the Ministry of Education, UNESCO, KENATCO and Sports for Development Africa-GIZ. The 2-day workshop also provided opportunities for broadcasters to be informed on the policy so that they are able to produce radio content that is accurate, credible and of high quality. They also jointly came up with possible topics that would enable the broadcasters to create content for live radio productions that will have an impact on the public through the Participatory Radio Campaign model.
The 2-months radio campaign is geared towards increasing the level of understanding of Physical Education among the students and communities at large. In that way, the community members are able to embrace P.E as a tool towards building strong and healthy communities, creating career opportunities. teaching students important life lessons such as discipline, conflict resolution, as well as social and emotional skills that help them create meaningful relationships with their teacher.
