Kakuma Sports Activity

Unity in diversity and togetherness is one of the key drivers in promoting development within the society. Socio-economic progress goals can be fostered when people from all walks of life living within the same social set up purpose to join their hands for common good. Sports for development Africa identifies sporting activities as an effective approach in promoting diversity and togetherness in addressing issues to do with education, gender equality, health, peacebuilding, violence prevention, and good leadership among others
In February 2022, Kenya Community Media Network (KCOMNET) in partnership with, GIZ/CPS and Lutheran World Federation (LWF) embarked on a course to not only bring together community members but also local journalists in Kakuma and Kalobeyei settlement to champion for peaceful coexistence in diversity and also to foster social cohesion and collaborations through the friendly football tournament. The derby which was supported by Sports for Development Africa took place at UNV field in Kalobeyei and Kakuma rangers field bringing together a total of 44 players and a huge number of football enthusiasts, spectators, and fans in the community. The men and women from diverse communities who participated in the activity got an opportunity to assess and appreciate their different capabilities and strengths in building a peaceful and just society through dialogue.

In his famous words, Nelson Mandela said “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where there was only despair.
Sports have been used for quite a long as a “tool” that unites communities, initiates conversation, and addresses issues in different communities. Umoja Radio for Peace aims at using sports to address the myths and misconceptions between the refugees and host communities in Kakuma, Turkana County.
