Amplifying Women’s Voices to Combat SGBV.

Kenya Community Media Network: Amplifying Women’s Voices to Combat Gender-Based Violence

The Kenya Community Media Network (KCOMNET), with its network of community radio stations across 30 counties, has been at the forefront of championing the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). At the heart of this mission is Dada Radio in Siaya County, which has emerged as a powerful advocate for women’s rights. This vital work is further amplified during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that KCOMNET uses to educate, advocate, and inspire action. Funded by StemVan Africa, our programs aim to empower communities and amplify women’s voices to bring about real change.

Dada Radio: Fighting for Women’s Rights in Siaya County

Harriet Etyang, founder and director-Dada Radio

Siaya County has seen its share of challenges regarding gender equality, but Dada Radio is making strides to address these issues head-on. The station’s programs focus on raising awareness of SGBV, providing survivors with the courage to seek justice, and creating platforms for women to share their stories. Through collaborations with local leaders, activists, and organizations, Dada Radio is fostering a culture of accountability and respect for women’s rights.

During the 16 Days of Activism, Dada Radio intensifies its outreach, hosting discussions, survivor testimonials, and community dialogues that highlight the importance of ending gender-based violence.

The Recent Surge in Femicide Cases

Kenya has witnessed a troubling rise in femicide cases, drawing widespread concern. In 2024 alone, several young women have lost their lives to violent acts perpetrated by partners or strangers. These incidents have sparked protests, calls for justice, and demands for more robust protection mechanisms for women.

The brutal killing of a university student in Nairobi earlier this year and the discovery of several cases of domestic violence escalating into murder have laid bare the urgency of addressing SGBV at every level. These tragedies remind us that combating gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue but a societal responsibility.

The Role of Community Media in Combating SGBV

Community radio stations like Dada Radio play an essential role in addressing these challenges. Unlike mainstream media, community radio has a unique ability to connect with local populations, providing culturally relevant and relatable content. During the 16 Days of Activism, these stations became lifelines for education, advocacy, and support.

Through dedicated programming, Dada Radio ensures that:

  • Survivors’ stories are heard, inspiring others to break their silence.
  • Communities are educated on the dangers of normalizing harmful practices.
  • Local leaders are held accountable for their role in fostering safe environments for women and girls.

A Call to Action

The fight against SGBV requires collective action from all sectors of society. KCOMNET calls on communities, policymakers, and organizations to:

  • Strengthen legal frameworks to protect women and girls.
  • Increase funding for SGBV prevention and survivor support services.
  • Engage men and boys as allies in the fight against gender-based violence.
  • Amplify the voices of survivors and grassroots advocates to influence policy and cultural change.

As the 16 Days of Activism continue, KCOMNET, through Dada Radio and its network of community stations, remains committed to amplifying women’s voices and driving action to end gender-based violence in Kenya.
